5400 – Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry

Course Description:

This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour Maritime safety and health Outreach Training Program to their employees and other interested groups. Special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour Outreach Training Program as well as the most hazardous in the maritime industry using OSHA Maritime Standards as a guide. Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Training Program, to conduct 10- and 30-hour maritime classes in shipyard employment, marine terminals, and longshoring, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion. Students in OSHA #5400 Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for the Maritime Industry who wish to participate as authorized Outreach Trainer Program trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program must successfully prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA maritime industry Outreach Training Program topic individually or as part of a group and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course. Prerequisite:

Students must successfully completed:

OSHA #5410 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry and have five (5) years maritime industry safety experience. A degree in occupational safety and health from an accredited college or university, certification a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or a Certified Marine Chemist (CMC) may be substituted for two (2) years of work related experience. Authorized OSHA Maritime Industry Outreach Training Program trainers are required to attend OSHA #5402 Maritime Industry Trainer Update Course at least once every four (4) years to maintain their trainer status

Prerequisite Form

Prerequisite Policy:

The purpose of this policy is to inform students of the options regarding submission of prerequisite information.

All students participating in a Train-the-Trainer course are required to present and receive approval of the prerequisites for verification showing eligibility to attend a trainer course prior to registering for any trainer courses.

Students are solely responsible for providing sufficient supporting documentation to prove eligibility and receiving approval of eligibility prior to registering for any trainer course. 

If the prerequisite form is denied for any reason, and the student has elected to register, prior to receiving approval of eligibility, then the tuition paid for the course will be refunded, and a 25% cancellation fee will be assessed.

No certificate or trainer cards will be issued without prerequisite submission and approval, and payment of course fees.

 

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Instruct Maritime workers in OSHA 10 and 30 hour Maritime Standards hazard identification courses;
  • Define Maritime terms found in the OSHA Maritime Standards;
  • Identify hazards that occur in the Maritime Industry and determine appropriate standards;
  • Locate OSHA Maritime Safety and Health standards, polices and procedures;
  • Describe the use of the OSHA Maritime standards and regulations to supplement and on-going safety and health program;
  • And, describe how to conduct internal training on the OSHA Maritime regulations.

Cancellation Policy

Registration fees are assessed in accordance with USF OSHA Training Institute Education Center cancellation rules.  All fees are subject to change without prior notice.  USF OSHA Training Institute Education Center will make every effort to advertise all changes to policies and fees as promptly as possible when such changes occur.

A cancellation fee equal to 25% will be assessed for all cancellation requests, regardless of the reason for the request.

The request for cancellation of the registration must be provided in writing (fax or email are acceptable) and must be received (not postmarked) at least 10 business days prior to the start date of the course for which the student is requesting cancellation.

If the request for cancellation is received more than 10 business days prior to the start date of the course, the student may elect either to send a substitute or to request that the funds be transferred to another course without penalty.

If the request for cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the start date of the course, a substitute student may be sent.  However, transfers and refunds are not available during this time period; and all funds paid for the course will be forfeited.

If a transfer is requested, the course elected must begin within six (6) months of the original course start date.  A transfer can only be requested one (1) time.  A $18 transfer fee will be charged.

If the student elects to register for a course less than 10 business days prior to the start date of the course, and thereafter, finds that attendance will not be possible, the student may elect to send a substitute student.  However, transfers and refunds are not available during this time period; and all funds paid for the course will be forfeited.
